More Big Game

On the same ride where we met Mama Moose, we also came upon a young bull moose hanging out near a pond.  He was small (for a moose - an adult bull can be up to 1500 pounds) and kind of scraggly with his shedding winter coat.  You can see the nubs where his antlers are emerging.
He stared at us with curiosity but didn't seem the least bit worried.
After awhile, he headed off into the brush.
Moose are common in the Uinta and Wasatch Mountains, but seeing them at 8000 feet in late May is unusual.  The heavy snow pack must be keeping them in lower elevations.
This bull elk preferred more open terrain for grazing.  He didn't stay around to socialize.  He was off over the hill before we had much time for photography.

  1. That elk has an unusual rack. I suppose the snow is keeping you in lower country as well.

The Bull Moose does look like he needs a good meal!!!!!

I always enjoy seeing your wildlife.

    Happy Memorial Day.

  3. How exciting to see elk and moose. When I saw moose in the Grand Teton a while back, I was in awe of them. Beautiful animals, especially the mama and her babies. I didn't get to see bulls with those huge antlers. An experience yet to come.

  4. Poor moose will feel more comfortable once his summer coat is fully revealed.

  6. I find it amazing that you are able to get close enough to moose and elk to take these wonderful pictures, even when they don't stick around for socializing. I enjoy going along on your rides so very much -- thank you.

  7. Janie, I love the pictures of the baby & his mother. Yes, they sure can be aggressive. You captured them beautifully.

The wee one reminds me of our little deer born in my gardens last year ...

    Have a beautiful week ~

  11. Great Moose encounters, Janie. I haven't seen "my" moose since early winter. Hope I don't see it too up close and personal this summer.
