Best Friends

Have you seen the "Puppy Love" superbowl ad?  It's sappy and adorable, and way too cute to miss!  If this doesn't make you smile, check your pulse.
Seeing this reminded me of a six week old Daisy interacting with Boss.
Seven years later, the trust and friendship remains.
Below is a photo of a bald eagle, hanging out in a cottonwood tree near the creek, looking for lunch.  Alas, the creek was frozen, so the fishing was poor. After a few hours, he moved on.  We've seen several bald eagles in the area this year.
Last week, we had a spring-like ride on Tabby Mountain.
No snow, dry trails, and temps near 50 at 7000 feet.  This week, we're getting much-needed snow.  Back to winter!  Maybe next month the weather will cooperate for a trip to southern Utah.

R & R

On a long, hot ride with no water in sight, the horses cool off with bites of snow.
Daisy luxuriates in snow drifts whenever she gets the chance.
Back at camp, the horses enjoy a roll in the sand.
Mischief looks like Pigpen from the Peanuts cartoons, with all the dust rolling off of him.
Ah.  After drying their thick fur and scratching their backs with a roll, Boss and Mischief catch the day's last rays of sun.

Cool, not Clean

Daisy has an affinity for water.  Any water.
After a dip and a good shake, she likes to dry off.
And roll around for a good backscratch.
Daily grooming complete, she's ready to get back on the trail!

The Meaning of Life

Just past the Colorado state line, where no one was available to greet us, we looked over the hill and into a valley and spied this old cabin.  Had we reached a welcome center after all?
Apparently not.  No one was home.  It's just a cowboy line cabin.  Maybe it's still used once in a while.  The pipe sticking up through the roof indicates there's a cozy pot-bellied stove within.  Accommodations might be pretty good.
Daisy liked the pond out front.  She took a few moments to cool off
and pond(er) the meaning of life through her reflection.

Trusting

In camp, Daisy likes to hang out with the horses.
Perhaps she's a little too trusting sometimes?

On the Bunny Trail

Is there such a thing as too many bunny tracks?
Daisy doesn't think so.
But sometimes multiple trails do present a dilemma: which trail should she follow first?

Watch Your Step!

The horses usually watch out for Daisy, but she has been stepped on a time or two.  Last Thursday, instead of getting out of the way, she ran up ahead and stopped in the trail.  Coco couldn't avoid her in time.
We heard a yelp and dismounted to check out the damages.
Poor girl.
She made it the quarter mile back to the trailer on her own power.  Since she was putting weight on the paw, we didn't think any bones were broken.
But she couldn't go on the ride.  She was very sad when we made her a bed and left her behind.
The good news is, she's doing fine now.
A week at home, resting, and she should be good to go.
Hint for next time, Daisy:  Do not stop abruptly in front of a cantering horse. This could be hazardous to your health.

Lady in Orange

This lady knows how to enjoy a clear mountain stream!
We've been gone for a week visiting family down south.
I'll catch up on posts and visiting your blogs soon.

Stylin'

Daisy looked very stylish around camp.  She was sporting a new orange neckerchief.  I bought it for her thinking it would appear close to hunter orange (so hunters would not think she was a cougar!), but the color turned out to blend in with her gold coat a little too well.
She does seem pleased with herself.  Maybe she'll go in for doggie fashion modeling.

Guard Dog

Well, if the human's going to nap, somebody's got to be in charge of trail security.

Fresh as a Daisy

Sometimes, through no fault of her own (if you don't count rolling in the dirt), a girl gets somewhat soiled.
But can't you tell she's wanting, willing, waiting to be clean?  Look at her sniff the air.  She's hoping to smell a bubble bath. (or maybe an elk, but we'll give her the benefit of the doubt.)
As soon as she spies a nice spring-fed water trough, she's in!
There's nothing like a cool swim to make your day, especially if you're a lab.

On the Trail Again

Daisy loves any outdoor adventure, and finding an unexpected patch of snow is especially exciting.
After a long day of sniffing and running, she's pleased to relax in a cold creek.
Aaah.
Now that's refreshing.

Delicious Delicacy

D is for deprived.

A defiantly dirty Daisy detects an opportunity and, with daring deception, leaps into the truck with a detached deer leg dangling from her dentition.  She is proud of this deceit and hopes no one will notice the deed.
She discovered the deer part already detached, dead, and demobilized, and is hoping to devour her dainty and delectable discovery.
Oh, drat.  Her daydream will be dashed, her delusions deflated.  Who knew humans did not desire a deer dividend decorating their truck?

On the Bunny Trail

I think I smell a rabbit!
I do!  I do!  And I see bunny paw prints!  Lots of 'em!
There's got to be a rabbit in here somewhere.
Well, darn.  Foiled again.
