The Eaglet has Risen

When rain threatens in the mountains (as has happened a lot this summer), we ride in the cedars (arid sandy land with a sprinkling of pinyon-juniper forest) near our house.
Wildflowers are still blooming.  Above are some primroses among what I think is a species of sunflower.
On a break, the horses enjoy feasting on Indian rice grass, one of their favorites.
Daisy digs a hole and settles into the cool, moist sand she uncovers.
We pass cliffs where we have noticed a huge nest in the past.  Compare the size to the swallow nests to the left and below the raptor nest.
This time, we see an eaglet perched on the edge!
Later we see both golden eagle parents, but they fly away too quickly for a photo.

  1. Beautiful wildflowers and astonishing to see an eagle nest on the ground. No big trees around I take it. :)

  3. Great picture of the baby Eagle, Janie... I followed the nesting eagles in Iowa this year on the webcam ---and miss them now that they have fledged.

Beautiful wild flowers also... Wow... Looks like all of you had a good time.
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  8. Such a fabulous sighting of the eaglet and the wildflowers are marvelous. Seeing many here as well. Our storms have been rather iffy and nary a drop today. No matter where you ride, it is spectacular.

  17. I guess the eaglet is not too afraid or it would hide down in the nest. I guess it's more interested in what tasty treat mom or pop might be bringing to the nest.
