Besides a great place to meet the kids and go for a hike, Daniel's Pass has beautiful wildflowers this time of year. Above is a field behind the lodge, covered with Mule's Ears, daisy-like yellow flowers, so named because the shiny leaves are shaped like a mule's long ears.

Common Camas Camassia quamash |
Camas is a member of the lily family. These flowers bloom densely in moist ground. From a distance, an entire meadow has a faint blue-violet color, as you may be able to see in the photo above. Native Americans pit-roasted the bulbs, bland in flavor, and also boiled them to yield a tasty syrup.

Douglas' Triteleia Triteleia douglasii |
Triteleia are also of the Lily family. We saw them on the same walk. They grow on drier ground, among the sage or in pine forests.

Apollo Butterflies |
Where flowers grow, butterflies flit. This pair seems to be embracing. Steve spotted them fly together in the air, then flutter softly to the ground as one. Such is love in the land of wildflowers.
Oh, Saddle up my poney, Janie, I want to come and sit in that field of flowers and enjoy a nice mild temperature (72 is highest I will go).

ReplyDeleteYou've named some unfamiliar to me. I walked the trail behind our house this morning - so many Arnica leaves. The forest floor will soon be yellow. Also the Hummers are visiting my garden. No butterflies yet.
ReplyDeleteMules ears - what a lovely name, destined to bring a smile to one's lips. The Apollo butterflies are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteYour wildflowers are beautiful and delicate. Nice pics.
ReplyDeleteThese fields of flowers are spectacular. Our mules ears aren't in bloom yet. Guess I'd better get out on my weekend to seek wildflowers.
ReplyDeleteFantastic capture of the loving pair of butterflies. Love the field of yellow Mule's Ears.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful flowers - I really like the deep purple of the Camas. Seeing an entire field of them would be a feast for the eyes. Steve did a great job spotting the butterflies; so nice they held a pose for him!

How I love the native wildflowers. Unless I missed a detail at some point the camas saved Lewis and Clark and Company from starvation....

All of these pictures are beautiful. Sometimes there is nothing more amazing than a field full of flowers. When I saw the picture of the embracing butterflies I got a little scared. At first when you look it looks like some scary hybrid butterfly. I was relieved to find that they were just giving each other hugs.
