From the Meadow

Little Mountain is a favorite spring ride that's close to home.
Our trailhead is at about 6000 feet elevation in a huge meadow.
The BLM has planted the meadow in crested wheat grass, a non-native bunch grass that does very well here.  Overgrazing wiped out the native grasses, so at least this provides a reasonable substitute, used because it's easier to cultivate than the native grasses.
The first seek of April, we rode to Cottonwood Spring, at about 7400 feet.  We tried to go higher, but ran into this:

  1. OOPS....... Glad you didn't try to go higher yet... Hopefully, all of that snow will melt soon.

Beautiful meadow.... Looks quite different from Canyonlands... What a great place to ride horses... WOW!!!

  2. I got to spend a couple hours with two ladies and their horses today. Pretty cool being with the horses who just stood there the entire time. One was able to sniff out the apple I had in my bag. The other was getting bit by mosquitos. Did not know horses get mosquito bites like people and even swell up with little bumps. The other horse's coat was too thick for the biters. Just wanted to share that as I am not a horse person...but learning.

  9. The meadow looks beautiful. The sow looks beautiful as well, but I hope it will soon be gone so you can ride higher up than the spring.

  10. Interesting about the grass. So much of the west is like that. Is it something to do with a drier climate than it used to be. I wonder?

  13. That meadow is about as high as the highest place we have in NC, Mount Mitchell (6600 ft). Looks like it would be a good place to gallop.

  14. I really like the soft green of the grass right now. That snow must have been a nasty surprise though!
