Canyonlands, Day 4, The Return

We spent the night on BLM land at Granary Springs, just as we did on our trip to the Canyonlands Maze District in 2009.
This old structure is about to go.
Look out, Daisy!
Motel 6 was still there and had vacancies.  We decided to stick with our trailer accommodations.
By the dawn of Day 4, we were too sore to ride again.  After all, we've been on break for 3 winter months, and our start to the riding season was rather sudden.
So, we loaded up and headed for home.
We had nice views of the Henry Mountains to the south as we drove along Hans Flat Road to Hwy 24.
Going north on 24, we drove alongside the ridge of the San Rafael Swell.
When we got home, Mischief (who had stayed in his very own pasture enjoying plenty of hay) gave a big yawn to show his lack of interest when his buddies came back.  Darn, now he was going to have to share the hay and his favorite sunning spot in the shed.
The next morning, it snowed AGAIN at our house.  Obviously, winter isn't over yet.

  1. The snow will allow those sore muscles to recover. I love the photo of Boss with snow on his nose!

  2. That was a fun ride. I really enjoyed all your pictures of places so familiar to me. The year my dad passed the "powers that be" named a knoll on the Henry's after him. He supervised the buffalo herd down their for more than 30 years. He also introduced the Big Horn Sheep back into Canyonlands. That was his major work in the DWR. We usually go "eastering" on the Swell. It's generally cold and windy and occassionally snows. I was thinking that handy dandy head covering that Steve wore would work splendidly for a spring campout on the swell. The thing I love most about Utah, no matter where you go it's big country, and all so beautiful.

  4. Hi Janie, What a wonderful trip you all had.... I don't blame you for coming home a little early... You can get all of the soreness out ---and head out again!!!!!

No---doesn't look like Mischief was happy that the 'gang' is home... ha

Snow again???? Goodness---it looks like spring here today, after all of our rain.

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  5. You guys had a great trip. I think I've said before I spend from 2nd through 6th grade in Price. We traveled a lot through the area and some of your photos and names look and sound vaguely familiar but I'm not very familiar with them.
We used to go to a Boy Scout Camp at or near San Rafael Swell. I remember roasting all day and freezing all night and lots of cliffs that were great for echoes.

  7. Fascinating trips through Canyonlands! And I hope spring will also come to Utah soon. We in Austria are also waiting to see some green buds.
    Best wishes!

  10. This was a great ride for your first of the season. I imagine Mischief was upset that his buddies came back and brought snow with them. I hope your sore muscles have recovered by now.

  15. This was an awesome ride. No wonder you're sore, I am too just thinking about all that riding. Love the almost fallen down building. Gotta' wonder what's holding it up. No snow in S AZ.

  16. Fantastic! I love the one where Daisy is looking very warily at the barn, but your horses are always so lovely. Is that a Juniper tree next to the barn I wonder?

  17. That structure looks like you could just wrap it in paper and fly it like a kite! Always a good feeling when you get home safely off the road just before the snows hit, eh?

  20. My huband, another couple, and I are planning a horse riding trip in the San Rafael Swell in May and would appreciate any comments or advice as to the best areas. I like the area of Sinbad's Head and north of there and we were also thinking about riding in the Mexican Mountain area along the San Rafael River. Any advice? We are Back Country Horsemen with many years of riding experience.
    Thanks, Paula Lenz

  21. Paula,
We have not ridden in the areas you mention. The closest would be a ride we took around Temple Mountain in 2009. (I did a blog post on it .) I'd love to help but I don't have anything to offer for the rides you mention.
We are interested in riding in the Swell and we've been looking at the maps and plotting to get there. I'd love to hear of your experiences on this trip if you have time to get back with me.
If you have questions about other rides, particularly those in the Uinta Basin where we ride the most, we'd be happy to try to help.
