Rock Art and Windows

Varnished rock panels are prime territory for petroglyphs.  As we rode on Wild Horse Bench, we kept our eyes peeled and found this:
It appears to be snake wearing a headdress, with an anthropomorphic figure drawn just under the snake.  The art is pecked into the rock and has probably been there for up to 1000 years.  The petrolyph style is similar to the Fremont art found in Nine Mile Canyon, located 12 miles south and on the other side of the Green River.
We also saw this little window in the rocks:
And of course Daisy and Steve had to do some climbing:

  1. It must be a real thrill to come across something that very few people have ever seen before.
I'm impressed by Daisy's climbing skills - Labrador cross mountain goat?

  2. There must be many sacred places in the western U.S. How wonderful that you can see them in person.

We have some petroglyphs here in Ontario that I know about but I have only seen photos of most of them. I imagine a lot has been destroyed here building roads and cities before Europeans realized the value of the First Nations' civilizations.

  8. Isn't it just incredible to be somewhere ---and think about what could have gone on there 1000 years ago... Unbelievable!!!!!!

Love seeing those rocks... The one showing the hole in the rock --has the profile of a face above it... See it???? The hole is where a necklace would be ... See the neck, the chin, lips, nose and eyebrow..... NEAT!!!!

Of course Daisy had to climb with her Daddy, didn't she????? ha
    Hugs,

  9. Lucky you to have discovered the petroglyph! I keep my eyes open in areas of rock cliffs such as this and have sometimes been rewarded, too.

  10. It looks like those petroglyphs are enough out of the way to be fairly safe from vandals. They are an amazing piece of American heritage. The window through the rocks is pretty remarkable too.

  11. I "heart" rock climbing, not the real McCoy, but jumping from rock to rock and scrambling up. That's fun!

  14. Nature has a way of telling a story if you know how to decipher it, even after a 1000 years.
That is amazing! What a fascinating treasure you all found.
And then there is that wonderful window into another world all together.

    Enjoy you week, Janie.

  15. How wonderful to come across that art in nature. You would love our bushmen paintings in South Africa. I love the last photo too with Steve and Daisy as "king of the castle" Thanks for your continued visits to my blog. I've been rather busy lately and trying to catch up on blog visits. I love the rides I share with you. Thanks ! Have a wonderful week ahead. Blessings, Jo

  16. Nice catch on the petroglyph! Classic Anasazi? For some reason, the zig-zag snakes shows up in many places--including Australia & Finland.
