(American Black Bear, photo from Wikipedia)
Boss gets anxious and jumpy when he smells bear.
Steve recognizes the symptoms and we start looking for bear sign.
Sometimes we find bear scat.
Or bear paw prints.
On our last trip to the mountains, we saw these bear claw marks on the aspen. Some were old, but several were very recent.
Boss's nose knows. He's our official bear-ometer.

It's good to know when bears are around!
ReplyDeleteWOW! This post is so exciting! I felt like I was experiencing it too. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend!
Great camera critters shots this week :-)
ReplyDeleteIt's good to know if there's possible danger close by! Bear can be scary especially if they have cubs. We used to live in bear country. They are beautiful creatures to see at a distance. Not quite as sweet in your backyard!
ReplyDeleteSmart horse! :)
ReplyDeleteWhenever I hiked in Yellowstone, I was always just a bit nervous about running into a bear! It's nice to have Boss' nose with you. ;)
ReplyDeleteHi Janie, Hope you didn't see that bear (or bears)... I don't blame Boss for getting nervous. I would also!!! Do you have alot of black bears out there? We have lots of them in the Smokies.
ReplyDeleteHave a great Sunday.
Hugs,
Betsy
Amom and two cubs had been hanging out in the area where we hiked today. Our only wildlife sighting was a black slug.
ReplyDeleteRight on Boss. You found the evidence. Glad you didn't run into a bear.
ReplyDeleteSuch an interesting set of photos! Great work! Greetings from Finland!
ReplyDeleteHe surely earns his oats with the bear sniffing-out! Makes me feel grateful that the nastiest critter I have to worry about at home are the relatively harmless adders.
ReplyDeleteA good bearometer is a thing of beauty, great photos
ReplyDeleteI'm with Boss - I'd get anxious and jumpy, too, especially seeing all the 'evidence.'
ReplyDeleteGreat post!
Awesome photo story! Love that nose. :o)
ReplyDeleteAre the bears aggressive? Good to be able to recognize the signs of their presence.
ReplyDeleteI'd be paying attention to the bearometer!
ReplyDeleteAdrienne, black bears are rarely aggressive unless it's a sow with cubs. They're also likely to stay away from a human on horseback because the duo appears so much larger than they are. A human who'd been dumped off a horse in their path might have some concerns, however...
ReplyDeleteWhen I find bear I SCAT! hee hee!
ReplyDeleteI've seen the signs, but I've still never seen a bear here. I guess I need to roam the alleys in the middle of the night when they are looking for an open trash can.
ReplyDeleteOh My gosh that is the one thing that scares me when in the mountains. Great shot of the bear
