The sego lily, Utah's state flower, usually has white petals.
Today, we saw this one with deep pink petals, a rare treat. The bulbs of this plant are edible. Native Americans dug and ate the root and taught the first Mormon settlers to do the same when food was scarce.

Ah, there is a street named Sego Lily right near my house, but I didn't know what the flower actually looked like. Pretty!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful and useful plant. Great selection for a State Flower.
ReplyDeleteHi Janie, I have never heard of the Sego Lily. It is gorgeous--especially that pink one. That's neat that the Native Americans taught the Mormon settlers to eat the root when food was scarce.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your state flower with us.
Hugs,
Betsy
Wow, that deep pink is outstanding. I haven't seen any sego lilies blooming here, yet. And only seen them in white. Didn't know the bulb was edible. Maybe I'll have to try that too.
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of a sego lily either, what a beautiful flower.

I've only seen them in nature once and they were white. I actually saw them over on a hillside by Tess's house (just in the gully by Sego Lily Drive).
ReplyDeleteThe pink one is beautiful!
What an amazing flower...in both colors!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful flowers. Great shots.
ReplyDeleteOooh how beautiful! Thanks for sharing it with us!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful state flower! I have never heard of it!

I too have never heard of this flower, but it is lovely and obviously useful too.
ReplyDeleteAwesome Lily! I posted a Mariposa Lily this week one of California's few in this family. The others that I do not show are all desert dwellers like yours and I believe they are all part of the same genus!
ReplyDeleteThat's very, very beautiful. Lilies take quite a variety of shapes.
ReplyDeleteHow pretty! I've never seen this before. Great shots!
ReplyDeleteI do hope people don't dine on these lily bulbs anymore, they are so beautiful to look at it would be a pity to eat them all up.
ReplyDeleteI have never seen that flower before, beautiful! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWhat lovely flowers, and what a treat to find a rare one. Excellent photos.
