Skunked

The third week of February, we make an annual trek on Jones Hole Creek from the fish hatchery to the Green River and back. (Four miles each way. Part of the trail is within Dinosaur National Monument, so our dog Daisy isn't allowed.) The attraction is that baetis (early-season mayflies)begin emerging along the Green at this time of year, and some years the fishing is excellent. We were surprised to find so much snow along the trail, but the baetis were there.
Steve and a friend fished, both on the Green and on the way back. They just didn't catch anything. This was one of those times when the fish didn't seem to care what bounced off their noses.

We smelled a skunk about halfway along the trail. Maybe that should have given us a hint about what the fishing would be like.
The fisherguys returned a little discouraged.

However, there were compensations.
Beautiful scenery.

Frozen waterfalls.

The mountain sheep.

The deluge site,

explored by archeologists in the '60's. (They were flooded out while working, thus the site's name.) This site is said to have been inhabited intermittently for the last 7000 years.
Pictographs are found on the rock walls near the site.

And on the drive to the Hole, a golden eagle hung on the Diamond Mountain thermals beside us as we went up the switchbacks. Alas, I wasn't quick enough with the camera.
It was a great day to get out and see our world.

  1. Too bad the boys didn't catch any fish. You're not just a kiddin' about there still being a lot of snow. Still beautiful, of course. Maybe next time.

  6. Janie: Thanks for taking us along on your fishing trip. I get the same feeling on early fishing trips but know the beauty around makes up for the lack of fish.

  8. This is just a wonderful nature world. I can feel the fresh air, I don't know the smell of a skunk, it is bad is it not? A pity you missed the trout for dinner. I guess all this beauty was compensation enough. It is great to see your world, Janie.

  11. I am surprised to see mayflies around in that cold. They are out in abundance in July around here. I was afraid the "skunked" reference was going to be more personal. Great photos.
