Steve and I had never toured an aircraft carrier, so so when our son propsed a trip to the Intrepid with the grandkids, we were ready to go. The Intrepid is docked at Pier 86 on the West Side of Manhattan. First commissioned in 1943, the Intrepid served in the Pacific during WWII, and later in Vietnam. It was also a recovery vessel for Gemini and Mercury space missions. She has been docked in her present location since 1982.
A carrier deck with a big city skyline looming behind it is a sight to behold:
The kids enjoyed the helicopter with teeth:
And practicing their flying skills:
But my personal favorite was the view out the flight control tower window:
That billboard is awesome, now there's some excellent marketing. I like the helicopter with teeth too. The skyline in the background does make it interesting, looks like fun.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a fun visit. I've always wanted to tour a carrier. Now I know where to go. :)
ReplyDeleteHow exciting to be in NY. Great photos!!!
ReplyDeleteWow, what a thrill! Love the little guy in the helicopter.
ReplyDeleteOnly in New York...looks like the grands are having a great time...
ReplyDeleteOh Janie, That picture of your grandson in the helicopter is AWESOME... You need to frame that one..
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures from the Intrepid.
Hugs,
Betsy
The billboard is funny. Kind of funny that somebody would pay money for a sign like that but it stands out.
ReplyDeleteI♥N.Y.! What a great place to be. Stunning pictures.
ReplyDeleteNYC, Wow! Such a different world. And thus the sign. I like the shot of your Grandson flying.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great piece of history to visit.
ReplyDeleteThat billboard is priceless!!!
I visited a similar (same class) aircraft carrier in Charleston, South Carolina. It was a fantastic experience, but I don't remember any helicopters with teeth such as you saw. I also liked the billboard you captured.
ReplyDeleteHilarious billboard!
ReplyDeleteI know you had fun. I have been on a couple of carries having been a 20yr navy wife & stationed at several squadron bases. I bet the kids loved it too!
ReplyDeleteGREAT PICS!
I'm so glad you took the opportunity. It is amazing to climb on one of those vessels. We had the chance to tour one in Portland during the Rose Festival. Mind boggling!
ReplyDeleteReally great photos. Quite a departure (and contrast) from your alpine scenes.
ReplyDeleteLooks like an exciting place to visit! And definitely very definite from your usual views!
ReplyDeleteI have never been on aircraft carrier either! My dad was on one in the South Pacific during WWII so I'd very much like to tour one.
ReplyDeleteLooks like the kids thought this was a cool excursion!
What great photos, Janie! The kids are adorable and they look like they're having the time of their lives! That shot of the skyline from the carrier speaks volumes, doesn't it?
ReplyDeleteJack and I toured the Midway which is an aircraft carrier in San Diego. It was just amazing.
