Cranes and Wildflowers

Lake Mountain is a good place to view wildlife. We saw these sandhill cranes feeding in Gull Lake.
As we approached they took flight over the aspen trees, squawking with their unique, loud call.
We also saw two elk cows, and a herd of elk peeking at us through the aspens. No time to get out the camera, though, before they were gone.
Grass is greening,
Spring beauties and buttercups are out.
Mischief and I were lookin' good in our still water reflections. All they way down we had great scenery to admire.
The aspens are bare, but they should be in their spring finery in a couple of weeks.

  1. Beautiful! I assume Daisy doesn't chase the elk? Our Aspen are just starting to leaf.

  2. I hope you know how lucky you are to live in that country ... and be able to roam as you do on horseback. (That's a rhetorical question ... because I know you do.)

  3. One of my most favorite things is when the trees green, but I have to say those stands of bare white trunks look so beautiful. Happy Mother's Day!

  6. You and Mischief look great in the reflection. It's hard to get that camera out in time when you need it and impossible to have it ready all the time too!

  7. I don't know what it is about wild animals, but they just make nature feel so complete! How many days in a month do you and Steve spend outdoors?

  9. Gaelyn, Daisy will follow the elk scent, and sometimes she'll chase a group for a short distance, but she gives up quickly. She's too busy trying to keep up with the horses.
Robert, yes, we know we're lucky to live where there's so much beautiful open land for riding, and luckier still to have the free time to do so.
Esther, we try to get out 3-4 times per week, whenever possible.
To Coyote Fe and all the moms out there, Happy Mother's day to you!

  16. I love these shots. The wildflowers are so beautiful. I love the shot which shows the landscape covered with areas of purple which I assume are some of the wildflowers. The reflection of you and Mischief is excellent. You both look great!

  21. Very beautiful lake country. Glad you could photograph the cranes. The picture of you & Mischief is wonderful. (I also enjoyed your Q post - Like your quarter horse, I also get queasy over bears - I'm OK with goats, though...)

  22. Janie, what a great scenery! I loved your last two picture best, and I'd love to walk into the last picture right away :) The cliffs are breath taking!
And I also love the aspen wood very much: I know aspens, but I've never seen a whole wood of them. The gray stems are so pretty!
If I lived in Utah, I'd be the whole day on horseback :))
