We went for a ride on Dry Canyon Ridge. The aspen are still green, but it won't be long before the hillside turns gold.
The serviceberries are loaded with fruit. Native Americans considered these berries a staple and dried them for use all year long. Birds and other wildlife also enjoy these berries. We've tried them, but they seem very bland to us. I guess our expectations are too great, or we're just plain spoiled.
Water's always a highlight on any trip ... probably especially so in the arid west (and on such high ground)? You should play a joke on Thanksgiving and bake a service berry pie (or at least say you are), and you know the old trick, all it takes is one of them in there to make it a service berry pie ... the rest can be apples!
ReplyDeleteI've suddenly (and inexplicably) have gotten a craving for service berry pie ... yum! <|:^)
ReplyDeleteHang on Steve! Aspens are changing quickly here. Soon you'll be posting the golden hillsides. Coco seems to have made friends quickly with Daisy. Have a relaxing weekend, Janie.
ReplyDeleteOh those gorgeous blue skies, Janie.... Love them. Got some Fall color pictures today from a Canadian blog friend. SO--it won't be long til those colors begin here. Can't wait to see your golden aspens.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend.
Hugs,
Betsy
So beautiful and can't wait for pics of the Apens. *hint* :-)
ReplyDeleteService berries have never been one of my favorites.
ReplyDeleteIf our nights stay so cool we'll soon be seeing the aspen gold.
true, winter is on it's way. I saw on the news that someone sent in a picture of some snow in the high country today . . .
ReplyDeleteIt's one of life's joys to see the changing of the seasons. The change starts so slowly and subtly and then it seems there's suddenly an explosion of colour.
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice ride :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice ride :)
ReplyDeleteBland Berries? not enticing.
ReplyDeleteDaisy always find a cool spot to 'cool' off...she is my kind of girl.
Fall is magic time in the mountains. Clean air and crisp days. Too bad it is so short, soon snow will fall.
ReplyDeleteWe've always had a Serviceberry tree wherever we lived. And I never ate one berry. We plant them for the birds.
ReplyDeleteThe trees are starting to turn around here, but it's been so dry that we don't have much pretty green anyway. I like Daisy's way of cooling off.
ReplyDeleteJanie....love the photos....Daisy looks like she is really enjoying herself...
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos as always! Our seasons are so different, we are still waiting for it to be cool enough here to even get out to BBQ or spend any kind of time outdoors! Hope you had a great weekend :-)
ReplyDeleteOh come on Coco, dive in!!! Go for it!!
ReplyDeleteJanis, these are beautiful views of the mountains, I can't wait for fall to begin. I'm tired of hot and sticky weather.
ReplyDeleteDaisy and Coco do look like they are communicating the same thought.. water Please!
