Prickly Surprise

As we continued down the road at Ouray National  Wildlife Refuge, we saw
geese strutting in pairs,
and a heron on the wing.
When we reached the cottonwood trees growing along the Green River, we looked up to find

Mr. Porcupine! He seems to be having his usual bad hair (quill?) day, but that doesn't stop him from enjoying a siesta after lunch.
In another tree, we found
Mrs. Porcupine, perhaps?

  1. wow--what a find. I've seen them lumbering along the roadside but never curled up in a tree. Our hound used to come home periodically with a snoot full of quills.

  3. Hi Janie, I've never seen a Porcupine in real life. I've seen lots of pictures --and probably seen them in a zoo.. BUT--never in the wild. They ARE prickly, aren't they?????

    Thanks for sharing.

    Have a great day
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  4. Great porcupine pictures! Very observant of you guys to even spot them up there. I'm sure if Daisy was with you she was glad they were up in a tree.

  5. Great capture Janie, they are hard to catch up a tree. It is so good to see you back and thanks for stopping by my blog. I will catch up on everyone's posts when I get home....wifi is not as easy as one thinks to locate when travelling on the hound.

I think Mr. and Mrs. Porcupine make a sweet couple.

  7. Janie, I am happy to see you and Steve are back. I was just thinking about you the other day and wondering if or when you would start posting again.

Its cute how the geese walk together in pairs. And a nice surprise seeing the porcupines hanging out in the tree. All in all it looks like you two had a great day wandering around the refuge.

  8. Hello Janie! Great shots in the wildlife refuge. I esp like the heron in flight. I've never seen a porcupine, but our dogs used to get quills in their snouts. They are not easy to get out! Nice shots of these two tree climbers.

  9. That last capture really shows the "Mrs" unquilled belly. Wonder if there was youngsters about. Sure is a great refuge.

  10. Love your combination of landscape and wildlife ... the new green, a flying reflection in the water, geese and porcupines enjoying the sun, all merge to tell the story of spring.

  12. You had quite the prickly day! I see them in my back woods frequently, and they sometimes think they can take up residence under my deck. I discourage that!

  13. I love the geese 'strutting in pairs' just as if they're performing the steps of a stately dance. Those porcupines look fearsome - well, the quills do.

  14. Well Happy Spring to you! I haven't seen a porcupine in the wild. They are quite the disheveled creatures.
