We first saw this hawk diving into some bushes near the bird feeder, trying to catch a sparrow. He didn't succeed. Later, we found him perching on the crabapple tree, watching us watching him. Our best guess is that he's a juvenile Cooper's Hawk.

WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW! Wonderful!
ReplyDeletefantastic shot - I love the colour contrast, and the texture of his feathers. I feel like I could just reach out and stroke him, although obviously that might not be the most intelligent thing to do. (but when did that ever stop me)
ReplyDeleteI have no idea what he is, but he's beautiful! And doesn't he look lovely against the red of the fruit!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!

Wow, what an intense stare. Looks like a very small twig to hold on to. Excellent capture Janie.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I know the hawks have to eat I'm kind of glad it didn't get its sparrow.
I'm watching crowds of White-crowned and Chipping this morning.

Excellent image. Yup, no doubt about it, it's a coops!
ReplyDeleteA wonderful capture :) I've never had much luck with catching a photo of a hawk... they always fly off!
ReplyDeleteYour shot of the hawk in incredible, Janie. His eyes are so piercing and I could reach right out and pluck those beautiful red berries.
ReplyDeleteI love everything about this lovely photo ... the piercing stare of the hawk, the lovely red berries and the clear blue sky behind the network of branches ;-)
ReplyDeleteHugs and blessings,
I'm amazed (and envious) that you were able to get this close!
ReplyDeleteYour Hawk photo is wonderful, Janie - glad he was content with watching so you could snap this picture. I'm wondering if there will be snow in your photos this week? Snow falling today both in Denver and the Mts.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful snap. He is full of concentration.
ReplyDeleteDang if I can tell all the marsh, meadow, and field hawks apart, but it sure is an amazing pic.
ReplyDeleteCheck out the NYSt Conservationist magazine pics of the peregrine going after a snowy owl http://www.dec.ny.gov/pubs/60015.html gotta love those Wild Kingdom moments.
Beautyful shot, extraordinary hawk

Fabulous photo of a very beautiful bird. Thanks Janie.
ReplyDeleteWonderful photograph of Cooper's Hawk.
ReplyDeleteI have one that hunts in my back yard. Lately a Sharp shinned Hawk has come in. He is smaller than Cooper's. Together the two of them keep the Dove and House Sparrow population in check.
