Birds, Blue and Gray

Birds flit everywhere at 11,500 feet, on the slope of Leidy Peak. Perhaps they're enjoying the last days of summer. Steve managed to catch a few of them sitting still. Above is a White-Crowned Sparrow, identified by Sweetbay. Thanks for the help!
Bill S. at Wild in Idaho tells us the photo above is of an immature mountain bluebird, or perhaps a female. I have trouble identifying the little gray ones,
but even a half-blind birder could name the bright and lovely male Mountain Bluebird!

  1. Great pictures. I believe the "little gray one" is a female or an immature Mountain Bluebird.

  5. Thanks, Bill. After studying my bird book, I think you're right, at least about the second photo. I'm not sure about the first one.

  8. I just love those little mountain blue birds. I just saw one yesterday but they are rare around my house. Good for Steve catching them in his lens.

  9. they are lovely little birds, and it's amazing they held still long enough for a shot.

While camping this summer we had a white capped sparrow that was quite friendly and brave. It hopped right into the campfire circle and ate our meal droppings--and we were not in a designated campsite, just out in the wild. I was very surprised by its behaviour

  24. I really like your Mountain Bluebirds, but I also have trouble identifying juvenile birds. Fortunately Betsy usually knows what we're seeing at our feeders.
