Sope Creek

We spent a lovely Thanksgiving week in Atlanta with our son and his family.
One of many adventures featured a walk down Sope Creek, a branch of the Chattahoochee River and part of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.
The trip involved lots of barefoot rock hopping,
a great blue heron,
and the ghostly ruins of a 19th century paper mill.
The mill was built in 1855, utilizing the creek flow for power.  Burned down by Union troops during the Civil War, the mill was rebuilt a few years later and operated until 1902.
After so much excitement, some of us were worn out!

  1. Your new header picture... well.. new to me anyway since I just noticed it today, it's really awesome.

Looks like a nice place for a hike. And that napping pic of Jackson is so cute. What a silly nap position.

  2. Awww! nice to spend holidays with family.
what a change in environment from Utah!
but a great blue heron is just as good luck in Utah as in Georgia!

  4. Looks like the weather was perfect for your southern vacation. That's some great rock hopping! I've been wanting to get down to Atlanta for a while and visit their zoo (I'm a panda fan). Did you go there by chance? How interesting to see a bit of Civil War history!

Thanks for adding the e-mail widget. I'm signed up! ;-)

  20. Janie this post puts a smile on my face! What adorable grands you have. I like that they're following the family tradition of hiking and enjoying the outdoors. All that leaping does make one tired. Love your Header!

  21. I have seen "The Hooch" many times but never heard of Sope Creek until now. Your pictures, especially the ones showing the ruins of the paper mill, tell me I have to check it out next time I am in or near Atlanta.
