Not being a horse person I don't know these things, but don't the horses get cold in snow conditions? How come they don't have a blanket on them? We have some boarding stables nearby and although here in Sonoma County (northern Calif.) there is no snow, it does get down to freezing at times and all the horses (except one) had blankets on.
Jo, I'm so glad you're back near family and friends again. It's always good to get home. Sinbad and I, our horses have winter coats that are probably an inch thick. They don't seem to mind the cold. By choice, they will stand out in the snow, roll in it, and even lie down to sleep in it. As long as horses get used to the cold gradually and have time to grow appropriate coats, they do fine in cold weather. Around here, blankets are only used for horses that spend most of their time in the barn and are only turned out occasionally. These are usually show horses, and the owners don't want them to grow a (relatively unsightly!) thick coat. Suz, we get a few spring and fall weeks that don't need heat or A/C. Must be nice to have mild weather in January.
oh . . . I'm mostly communing with family and a few friends, relaxing indoors and catching those warm southern rays that beat through my south facing windows :) Love your horses dressed in their lucious winter coats.
Well - I would love to commune with THESE neighbors! Great pics, Janie. I skied downhill the past 2 days - great with some new snow. My son is skiing Snowbird with friends in beginning of Feb.
These are wonderful pictures. It's good that you have some quiet winter days. It definitely doesn't qualify as a favorite, but my most common 'thrill' this January has been shoveling snow!

Your horses look adorable decked out in their winter fuzzies! My horse would be envious -- he never gets much of a winter coat.
That's great that your horses can visit with the neighbor's horses. They look very happy all together. Our horses can see the neighbor's horses but not touch them -- which is just as well, because Prince is the kind who tears down fences playing with other horses over the top of the fence. He damaged the fence when he was boarded while we moved the house, so then he was put out with youngsters, one of which would play with him all day long.
BEAUtiful pics, esp the one in the middle with the red outbuilding in the background. I guess our fav January thrills and chills are just getting thru this month and closer to spring!!!

They look content to hang around the pasture, not hurry to get out on the trail. They know spring will be here soon enough.

Coco's coat looks so soft and fuzzy in that last photo. I hope Mischief's new addition to the stable is making is so he gets some time in there too.
