Tacky, Tawdry, and Tarnished

T is for Trash.
Finding trash along the trail really ticks me off.  It's enough to give me tachycardia.
Near a two-track, tripping over trash is all too common.
There's tin trash,

Trash from thirst quenching,
Tattered and tragic trash. Tissues, treads, tinsel, tossed, or thrown,

or simply lost.

For all of which I threaten a thrashing.
Leave no trace, I entreat these untidy tenants of Mother Earth.
Do not litter our terra firma.
Take care of our terrain, and be thankful  it tolerates our sometimes unintentional, always tactless mistreatment.
As they thrust their tedious waste upon earth's tenuous tableau, what are people thinking?  Or are they thinking at all?

  1. Well said! I do not understand how people can be so thoughtless with trash.

  2. I can almost assure you that North Carolina and South Carolina are the two worst states ever for trash. That was the first thing I noticed when I moved here.

In recent rains, a large tree fell across the river. You would not believe the amount of trash that lodged behind it making a small dam. So disgusting!!!

  3. "One man's trash is another man's treasure?" Usually not. Thanks

  4. Not thinking or don't care, either way is not good! :(

  5. Trash is one of my triggers when traipsing through the tundra or trees.

  6. It boggles my mind that someone has been out enjoying the beauty of a place and then throws trash around! What are they thinking. Or why are they NOT thinking?

  7. Well said, take nothing and leave nothing, that is how we should do to take care of the outdoor wildness.

  8. Ugh.... Why do we humans do that???? George posted almost the same theme on his blog today (Senior Moments)... Check it out. You won't believe what he found while searching for a waterfall. YUK!!!

  9. Clearly, they are NOT thinking at all. THis really annoys me as well Janie...I just don't get it at all. I find myself picking up after other people as well.

  10. It would be interesting to meet the people who do this kind of thing. I wonder what their own homes are like?

  11. The number of plastic bottles we find along trails is absolutely mind-boggling. We try to carry as much out as we can, but usually we can only make a small dent.

  12. Sorry, but people don't care about the earth...

  13. Now, there you have a topic that ought to be of interest to everyone. Especially Those That Throw...

  14. Great T translation.
I hate litter and trash thrown about. Does anybody like to see it? So why is it there?

  15. So true: take your litter home, you don't want people throwing trash in your garden either! At least I don't...

  16. Terrific post, Janie! Perfect for every day! I do hate to see what people do to the world with their TRASH! Thanks for posting this!

    Have a great day!

It would be nice if everybody visited and left no trace.

  18. EXCELLENT points! I love how you can TURN a phrase or a word! :D

  19. Hey I already described somebody else's ABC post as T is for Terrific so you get T is for Tremendous.

Trash anywhere but especially out in the woods just Torches me. It is so prolific. What's up folks.

  20. I applaud you Janie, I sometimes wonder if the people who leave so much trash on our beautiful land have the same overflowing trash out of their own homes. I vote we all dump their trash back on their own doorstep. Somehow I don't think they would like it.

  21. My sentiments exactly. I love how you weave the story around the theme letter for the week. Very thought provoking.

  22. That's terrible. I guess from all your usual post I just never thought that part of the real world was part of what you have to live with too. I don't know what's wrong with people!

  23. Its a shame we have Trashy people who don't care about the environment. Great T talk and photos, Janie

  24. What a great post. And a great reminder. So sad that anyone even needs a reminder about something like this. Seriously. Ridiculous!

  25. With you. Every time I see a batch of balloons leaving a story or set loose in some reckless, "romantic" way, I cringe. What long-term price does the earth pay for these short-term thrills?

  26. Contrary to Oscar the Grouch on Sesame street: "I HATE trash!"

  27. This is something I don't understand either. A tongue-twisting, yet thoughtful post this week!

  28. Trash turns me into a terrifying termagant, too!

I hate seeing litter anywhere, but in the wild places, it infuriates me! Lovely scenery, though, and the pic of you on the horse is quite lovely. It is you, isn't it?

  29. What a troublesome troupe of two-leggeds we can be. If only we thought before we tossed, terra firma would be truly beautiful! Great post Janie and very troubling the amount of trash we frivolously toss on land and sea. When I walk I pick up trash and I am amazed and saddened by the never ending task it is.
    Have a wonderful week.

  30. Doesn't it make you want to scream? Our beautiful planet is being despoiled by people too idle to carry their rubbish home or look for a litter bin. I understand that the 'usual' route up Mount Everest resembles and smells like an over-sized tip. The seas are full of junk too!

  31. Disgusting habit, I agree. The roads and trails here are terribly littered - last summer a mattress had been discarded high on a thin mountain track. Makes me tachycardia-ish :) too! I wish litterers could read.

  32. Probably not thinking.

We always carry a litter bag when hiking. And will again in April take part in our Washington Coastal Clean-up Day--it was such an event last year.

  33. Oh! Litterbugs should be lynched. I agree with the philosophy of leave no trace! How hard is it to put trash where it belongs? We walk trails at the Guana Preserve between the ocean and Intracoastal Waterway. The signs are simple: Take nothing, leave nothing.

The picture of you on horseback is gorgeous tho. The mountains are so pretty and I can smell the fresh air all the way in Florida.

  34. I know and it is always amazing what kind of garbage you find, and in places you think that few people go.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I agree: there is nothing more unsightly. You wonder what runs through a litter bugs mind (if anything at all)!

  36. I feel very annoyed whenever I see any nonsense human traces in natural places.

  37. I am frustrated every time I see trashes also. This is something which I can never understand; how can people be so inconsiderate? If they could take the trouble to bring these trashes to these places in the first place, they could take the trouble to remove them accordingly.

  38. One of the blights of modern world ... I understand how you feel. :)

  39. I have HUGE issues with trash... huge. I pick up trash every time I go out. And I'm always amazed at how MUCH there is pretty much everywhere, and the kinds of things. Some clearly have no clue.

  40. I get lost with the ABC. I started joining with letter P, then my brain crashed like what happens to my computer from time to time.

    Great valuable post Janie!

Yes, it's unthinkable for some irresponsible individual to do that. Twenty-two years ago, when I first came to Australia, the countryside was real immaculately neat and tidy with no single trash I saw in sight.

Years went by and in every opportunity I travel, my eyes couldn't escape the scallawags' misdemeanor on our pristine roadsides. It is even worst here in the city.

    Aweful, aweful lot indeed!

Now, they are talking climate change! Why won't the climate not change when people are the ones causing it?

The abusive treatment of our Mother Earth, its nature and every sources of its bounty.

  41. Jeez, makes ya want to lynch somebody. My pet peeve is that most of the trash is left by folks in pickups or ATVs that could easily haul it out.
