The Eagle Has Flown

On a drive into the mountains this week, Steve noticed a large bird perched in an aspen.
I got out to sneak closer for a photograph, but it flew before I got very far.  It was a huge bird with a white tail.  Its head also appeared to be white.
A bald eagle?  If so, it must have been migrating south, because it wasn't close to any body of water at that point.  Many bald eagles congregate along the Green River in the winter.  Perhaps that was its destination.
Wherever it was headed, this bird certainly looked majestic as it flew over the mountainous landscape.

  2. Isn't it fun to catch a glimpse of the bald eagle? We see a lot of golden eagles around here. One time I went to the grocery store and I kid you not--there was a bald eagle eating some dumped out food off the pavement. He drew quite the audience before flying off. That's the closest I've ever been to a bald eagle.

  3. That's the one thing I enjoy the most about leafless trees.... You can see the gorgeous big birds. Wow--you all got some great pictures.

  4. what a magnificent beast. There's something so awe inspiring about the big birds of prey, I used to be lucky enough to live near a colony of red kites. I could've watched them for hours.

  5. Steve captured the eagle really well considering it was flying away. Great series.

  7. We live not far from the Missouri and Mississippi rivers and there are SO many bald eagles - it's BEAUTIFUL!!! A lot of the little hotels in the "river towns" along the highway offer all kinds of "eagle" packages. They sure are a sight to see - that's a great shot by the way! ♥

  8. What fantastic shots of the "eagle"! I love the chance to see them in flight! I got to see one when I happened to be taking a hot air balloon ride and that was amazing -- eye to eye! And your BLUE skies! Wow! that is blue!

    Have a great weekend, Janie!

  12. If it is an eagle, you have done a magnificent job capturing him. I am not good at shooting birds on the wing. I must be on the noisy side.

Lovely sequence of a magnificent bird.

  15. These are nifty shots of this majestic bird against the blue and white backdrop. He probably spocked a water hole somewhere with those eagle eyes? Incidently, when you scroll down fast it appears he's flapping his wings, ha-

  16. What a wonderful sequence. It is interesting to try and figure out what birds are when they are at a distance and in flight. I'm often not sure.

  17. What a great sighting Janie. Looks like a bald eagle to me. Good captures for the distance.
I finally got my bird feeders filled today and can see a few sparrows and a junko.

  18. I have never tried to photograph an eagle but I know how frustrating it can be to capture hawks with my camera. Their eyesight is far superior to ours and they are so alert that they usually know I'm there before I see them.

At least you caught the bird in flight!

  22. I saw an eagle the other day, too. Total surprise to me. It was in a tree over the river, so not really out of normal habitat--just had never seen one so close to home before.

  23. Looks like a Bald Eagle to me too! Believe it or not we saw an eagle while we were driving down highway 40 last week. We figured it was a migrant that probably was headed to or leaving Jordan Lake.

  24. I just love the way you recount and narrate everything you encounter with your camera. Interesting, fun, amusing and above all, informative and educational.

But I can't resist reading your About Me over and over and over...especially in regard to your obsession in blogging with an equally hyperactive hubby.

    Blog on, Janie!

I know am not much around and I do appreciate your unfailing visit to mine though I appear to be on a hit and run rampage as if I am undergoing earthly tribulation.

Don't worry, when I come to visit yours, it is always Wholesale!

    That's how I operate! haha

  25. Great shot. We have eagles who winter within a few miles of Tulsa. I would like to see one. I'm not sure I've ever seen one in the wild.

  39. They are eye catching. There's a pair that perch in the same place, pretty close to the road, on my way to work. Eagles seem commonplace because of our coinage, but seeing one -- especially as you did in such a scenic spot -- is always breathtaking.

  44. Definite bald--they're on the move. Usually some hang around here through the winter, but if this -30 deg F air ices all the rivers, they'll probalby move on. Maybe they'll come your way.
