Wrong Way Janie

Anticipating the return of cold weather and some serious snow, we've been riding in the high country as often as possible.  Last Saturday, we rode on the Tworoose Pass trail, traveling up a ridge to the east of Rock Creek.
The above photo looks to the west toward Big Ridge, another of our favorite rides.
We had a small snag in plans when Steve and Boss galloped ahead into this aspen and spruce maze...
...and disappeared.
Mischief and I saw only one path, which happened to be the wrong one!  We trotted onward for at least half a mile before our mistake became apparent.  By that time, Steve and Boss had gone back looking for us.  Oops.
Whenever I hollered, Mischief whinnied, as if to insist he could call a lot louder than I could.  True enough.   Still, in deep timber, sound doesn't go very far.  I was feeling a little lonely, and Mischief was a little worried about bears.  An hour or more later, we managed to reunite with Steve and Boss, our big, brave protectors.
Unfortunately, Steve had been following Daisy for most of that time, assuming she had her nose to the ground tracking me.
Bad on Daisy.  She was apparently tracking elk! (You can see a couple of elk in the center of the above photo.)
This little adventure illustrates the enormous size of the country we ride in.   Never fear, though, we both had our GPS's and could have followed the trackback to the trailer, even if we hadn't found each other before then.

  2. how very scary, deep timber can make you feel so alone even when you are with someone. I'm glad you found each other. I have a little something for you today.

  3. BEARS????
So glad you found each other...Naughty Daisy. I hope you limited her to just 400 'pets' that day instead of 600.

  4. Ahhh, that Daisy! I told Mojo about this and she had a big grin on her face, so I assume she would have been doing the same thing! Quite an adventure! And your photos are terrific as always! Good to know that Mischief is keeping his voice in good shape! Marvelous, fun post, Janie!

Have a great weekend! And don't get lost!

  6. It's such Big country. I could see how it would be easy to get lost. But don't blame Daisy please. Glad you came together again instead of having to rely on the GPS to get back to the trailer. That would really be spooky, wondering where the other was.

  8. Getting separated would have made me kind of nervous. GPS's often don't work all that great in heavy woods.

  9. What an adventure! Gorgeous photos as usual...you've captured the moon in the first shot with those massive mountaintops. I can't imagine how high up you were! I love the shot with all the undressed aspens. The last shot is awesome.

  11. It must be reassuring to have the GPS devices. That's funny that Mischief neighed every time you called. Are you sure Mischief isn't a person in a horse's body? :)

  16. I'm glad you and Mischief got reconnected with Steve and Boss. Did you give Daisy a talking to? GPS units are great -- we keep ours with us when we are hiking so we can get back to the car if we lose our way.

  19. Gorgeous landscape and glad you guys found each other, although I'm sure that was a long hour. I'm not looking forward to the start of winter... they said the "s" word on the radio today. I guess it's a small possibility Monday morn. ACK!!

  21. That's a good story Janie, it was good you were on horseback, as opposed to hiking, plus the GPS: you were well prepared to get lost ... (although you were never "lost" so to speak ...)

  22. I always love reading your exciting adventures. Real cowboys and cowgirls that I used to watch in those silent movies when I was a little girl...they call it Open Air Cinema.

I am amused of your lifestyle.... lovely and satisfying life out in the outback.

I forgot about the clouds because I am more soaked up with the lost trail and even Daisy manage to forget her duty.

    haha

  23. Hi Janie, Hmmm - are you sure it was Mischief who was worried about bears? It made me smile to think of you and Mischief both "calling" for the other guys. We're heading to SL on Wed - hope the skies stay blue!

  27. Oh Janie, That had to have been kinda scary for you and Mischief---for awhile. Actually I'm sure it scared Steve, Boss and Daisy too.... Glad you all found each other... Be careful out there--and tell Steve to not get so far ahead of you...
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  29. amazing images and great adventure!

  30. I'm glad you found the right track again! And I'm still laughing at the thought of Daisy tracking elks instead of tracking you! My D'Ora would have done just the same (she loves tracking rabbits :)
Thank you for the wonderful pictures!

  31. Beautiful skies! I'm glad all ended well! Does Daisy follow Steve more than you?

  32. GPS or not, that is a bit frightening. You got some lovely photographs, though.

  35. That was quite an adventurous ride Janie. But oh my, that scenery is breathtaking. Great, great photos!

  36. Yes, Daisy got a talking to, but I'm sure she thought I was fine, so why not chase some elk?
Esther, Daisy definitely tends to stay with Steve. That's probably wise of her. Steve knows where he's going. I don't!

  37. GPS or not it always good to be reminded how easy it is to get disoriented whether in open country of the forest. I am always amazed at how the forest absorbs sound and how quickly you can feel alone. Beautiful photos Janie and a delightful ride. Thank you for sharing it with us.
    Smiles

  38. O my god! There are bears?!!!

Not only am I a little urban chick, but I'm a little urban chick from the back of beyond ... I wouldn't last 5 minutes even with GPS.

    I'm in awe!!!!!

Loving your stories and photos. :)x

  39. Janie: What a neat story to go along with the wonderful photos. The elk looking so small points to the greatness country in which you live.

  40. What a great story. Made me think of Winnie the Pooh with real people and the West!

  41. Wonderful story and photos. That last one is a classic!

  42. Holy smokes, I'm glad it wasn't a night ride. What a great story, told with such calm. If I'm ever lost on horseback, I hope it's with you and Mischief -- and your GPS! The muted colors of the timber without leaves is just gorgeous. And then to discover the elk, icing on the cake!

  43. Great adventure. Sure you could have got back with the GPS, but what about those BEARS?

  44. I enjoyed reading this exciting adventures with a happy ending, a wonderful way to present your beautiful photos. The last one with the rider, alone in the wildness is my favorite.
