Peafowl Showoffs

What do you call a group of peafowl?
An "ostentation" or a "pride", according to the San Diego Zoo.  Makes sense, given their reputation for vanity.
The pair hanging out on a hay bale in our neighbor's barn seem more worried about warmth than ostentation, but that's probably because the temperature was no more than 10 F when the photo was taken.
Remember the escaped goats that attracted equine attention a few weeks ago?  Here they are, appropriately contained.  No more Houdini acts for them!
The first calves are already on the ground.
We're warming up around here, but not in any great hurry.  We've had some crystal clear days since the last storm blew through.
Daisy loves going out to chase rabbits or sniff for rodents, no matter the weather.
I've spent most of January digitalizing 40 years worth of photos using one very slow scanner.  Steve has been busy planning rides.  Only a few more weeks and we'll be back to riding weather.
Meanwhile, we're chilling and dreaming of warm sunny days on the trail.

  1. With some of the temperatures you've had, I think I would be looking for warmth as well. I'm glad the goats will be doing no more Houdini acts (at least for awhile). I look forward to warmer weather arriving in Utah so we can enjoy some more of your great rides.

  4. Hi Janie, Winter is different for us too... We don't get out as much --although I do love hiking in winter as long as it is not too cold. I've been having some circulation problems in my hands ---so have some heated gloves on order. Hope that helps. My hands BURN when they get really cold...Regular gloves don't help much.

Can't wait til you are back out there on the trails. Can't wait til we can go out more --and also can work in the yard more....In the meantime, I'm working on Family History...

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  6. Dang goats are always troublesome. I love pea fowl.

I got a nice scanner specially made for scanning prints, slides, and film. In one day I scanned over 200 photos in just a few hours. Of course the real work is then tagging them so they don't lost in electronic oblivion. Lots faster than a flatbed scanner.

  7. Fun to see all the animals, that goat looks like it's smiling. How great that you've scanned a lot of your old photos! :)

  8. WGOA! Scanning 40 years of photos is a very big job! I'm impressed!

One thing about February skies in Ontario is we generally have more blue skies. And the days are already noticeably longer. Looks like you are seeing blue too.

  9. Why do cows half in winter I wonder? We're having a slowed-down winter here too.

  10. What a nice hang-out for the chilly Peafowls and Peacock. Love the adorable calf with Mothers watchful eye keeping tabs on her newborn.
Miss Daisy is a happy camper as long she has a Rabbit to play hide-n-seek with in the snow.

    Lovely post, Janie.
    Happy trail dreams ~:)

  11. Hi Janie, Glad to see you back. That top photo of the"pride" is great! The little bird looks like it has a pal to keep it warm. We're planning a UT trip for spring - hope late spring snows are minimal. (Though I know you need the moisture..)

  21. Great shot of the snow-capped mountains in the distance.

And good for you for using the word peafowl! Since most people don't know it, I usually just say "peacocks" even when I'm talking about a group that includes females - which has led me to wonder if it is one of those words that might disappear due to disuse.

  22. Those peafowl are sure pretty. I would not have guessed they could tolerate such cold temperatures, but now I've learned something new today. :-) The animals all look happy to have the sun shining on them. I love your snow-capped mountain view.

That's quite a scanning project you've got going. I remember my parents sorting photos to put in scrapbooks back in the 1970s. None of it is an easy task, but the family will appreciate it.

  23. I, too, am looking forward to some sunny snow-less days. :)

Popped over to catch up on your travels and also to ask a question. I'm in need of a corrective shoe farrier and can't find anyone. If, by some strange stretch, you may know of a person could you please let me know? My mare has navicular.

  25. I like the way we plan summer rides (or, in my case, hikes etc) the way gardeners plan gardens. Does Steve drool over maps the way gardeners drool over seed catalogs? I know I do...
