Leaving from the Island Park Road near Blair Draw, we rode the horses north toward Blair Spring, which flows from the ground near the Diamond Rim (northeast of Vernal). We followed an old jeep trail most of the way.
I really liked the panorama view of the gold-dusted hills.
Looking south, you can see through Horse Canyon to the opposite side of Split Mountain.
The wildflowers were blooming at 6000 feet.
That's a fun contrast of big views and little wildflowers. Did any famous travelers every go back and forth through that saddle? Or was it a place where there were ambush attacks in the old days?

ReplyDeleteIn answer to Rober's question: John Wesley Powell is one famous person who traveled through Split Mountain. He and his group of explorers floated all the way down the Green River to the Colorado and Grand Canyon in about 1869-70, and was the first to write about and record the waterways and terrain.
ReplyDeleteNo doubt lots of scoundrels and some other good guys have traveled that way, too. Every summer, guide agencies take tourists out to float the Green River through the Split Mountain section. There are even a couple of rapids to make things interesting.
