Uinta Bliss

U is for Uinta Mountains, formed from an uplift of the Uinta Mountain formation about 50 million years ago. The mountain range's name came from the Utes, a Native American people who have inhabited parts of Utah and eastern Colorado for centuries.
In summer, the wildflowers are ubiquitous -- and in a wet year, the mosquitoes are, too!
A view of this unusual east-west oriented mountain range gives me the utmost joy and an uplifting feeling. Heading uphill into the High Uintas is utopia.
Upstream on the Uinta River, a guy develops an unquenchable desire to wet a fly and is upbeat about catching trout.
These mountains are sometimes unkind to the unwary and unwise. Many of the trails are unmarked, and the weather can change in an hour. The deep woods and rocky terrain can be unbelievably unforgiving. Unprepared or unfit adventurers may suffer unfortunate and ugly consequences.

But if treated with utmost respect, the Uintas provide an urban escapee with unequivocal pleasure.

  11. Great photos, and yes, its country to be respected ... in more ways than one. And 50 million years old. The Everglades are 5,000 years old ... or young rather.

  18. I've been in the Uintas only once years ago when the wife and I took a day trip over from Bear Lake. We stopped at a Forest Service Ranger's office and they gave us some ideas for short hikesa and we did one.
We had a very nice time.

  25. I see at least one of my photos there :) Glad you could spread it around the world via your super-popular blog.

Always fun to see those pictures again. I think that last one of me hiking along a steep stream is just above Painter Basin as we headed over into Gilbert. Such a fantastic spot.
