Cicada Hatch

We made our spring trek to Jones Hole Creek this week. The 8 miles round trip from the fish hatchery to the Green River is always a great hike.
Steve glowed like a kid in a candy store when he saw cicadas on practically every branch along the stream.
He slapped together his 4 piece travel rod, tied on a dry fly that looked cicada-ish, and commenced to fishing -- or rather hunting, as he prefers to call it, since he does his best to stalk the fish.
The trout were in a feeding frenzy with so many full meal deals falling into the water. Steve must have caught (and released) close to twenty.

Can you see a trout in the air clear stream?

Here's the biggest catch of the day, a 19 inch rainbow. Steve looks pleased, doesn't he?
I don't fish, so I took the photos, scouted out flora and fauna, and enjoy the scenery.
Wildflowers were blooming:

primrose,

bluebells,

stream violets,

and yellow peas.
We walked right by a deer, who kindly stood still long enough for me to aim the camera.Neither horses nor dog can accompany us on this outing, but such a lovely place deserves a visit at least once a season.

  1. The final photo really draws me in. But all your photos do. I miss the sound of the cicadas. That's a distinctive sound of summer from many years ago where I grew up in Maryland.

  2. Thanks for the photo of the cicada - I had an involved conversation about them last night, trying to work out if we have them in the UK. Now having see one, I'm pretty sure we don't. Ramble over, looks like a great place to spend a relaxing afternoon. And I'm glad spring has finally sprung for you.

  12. What a wonderful walk. I'm with you it is much more fun to wonder around taking photos than to fish but Steve looked like he had fun.

  14. I love hiking; our family camped and hiked a lot when I was a kid. Good times!

This looks like such a great location for a hike. What an awesome rainbow trout he caught!!

When I moved to KS last summer, there were quite a few cicadas around here -- the shells and live ones alike. The cats liked to play with them -- several times I caught Fluff batting one around in the driveway. They make a rather loud whirring sound when a cat does this to them. Poor cicadas!

Great pictures as always. Makes me wish I got to go on that hike! :)

  18. I can't believe how clear that water is. Steve evidently had a great day fishing (or hunting) but you captured some great pictures. It looks as if you've found a little bit of heaven on earth.
