Swimming Low and Flying High

We went riding in the Cedars today and found a pond of clear water created by a small dam of sticks and mud. I at first posted that it was a muskrat dam, but a comment by Fishing Guy made me check my facts, and apparently muskrats don't build dams! Oops, sorry for the misinformation.
This little dam seems to be well maintained, so my next guess is that there's a beaver at work.

Daisy enjoyed her first swim of the season.

Followed by some fetching.

And then a pleasant roll down a grassy bank.

For a fun-loving lab, that constitutes the perfect outing. Of course, the eleven mile run with her horse friends was nice, too.
The day was picture perfect for all with clear skies, temperature in the high 40's, and very little wind.
We checked the old eagle nest we found a month or so again but didn't see any activity. However, on the way back we saw this golden eagle flying high overhead, rising on the thermals.

As you can see from the white mountain peaks, there's a lot of snow up high.

We won't be riding in the High Uintas until at least June. Meanwhile, they're pretty to look at.

  3. Oh Janie, After all of the cold temps and snow flurries we have had today, those pictures you posted just make me so jealous!!!!! The sky is so blue and that is a perfect temp. to be out there riding your horses. Sounds like Daisy loved it. She'll sleep good tonight I'm sure... HA---I'm sure SHE sleeps good every night!!!!!

Have a great one---and don't even think about going to the High Uintas until mid-summer!!!!

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  8. Janie: I do love the colors of your wild country.

I didn't know Muskrat made dams. I thought they just dug into the bank of a stream.

Thanks for visiting my part of the world

  13. That is a long way up for a beaver pond. We have many of them around here. It is interesting to see the pointed tree stumps around the ponds where they gather their logs. Very pretty pictures.

  14. Those riparian corridors in the desert are such special places. The beaver dams play a critical role in retaining the water on the landscape, and spreading it out in the shallows. Beavers are natures original hydrologists ... or do I mean dam builders?

  17. Janie I sure enjoy your rides. Daisy is one lucky dog. My Carson would have been right in that water fetching sticks also. That's a lab for ya'.
I never would have thought about beavers in that high desert environment. Interesting.

  18. Looks like a beautifully peaceful time was had by all on your ride through the Cedars. Wish I could join you. It's refreshing to see water in Utah after so much desert. I may blog about a water-rodent dwelling I found in an unlikely almost-suburban spot and now you and Fishing Guy have got me asking the same question: muskrat or beaver? Too bad my camera's far better at landscapes than it is at small animal shots, but at least the reedy dwelling is part of the landscape. Anyways, please pardon my ramble ... seeing your beaver dam here is helpfully educational ... Thanks!

  22. Thanks for this trip on horseback! In Indonesia we rode sometimes on horseback, but these horses were so small and yet I don't think they were ponies.
Thanks for your visit, have a nice day.

  23. That dam looks good enough to jump in...although I suspect if you're not a lab, the fantasy is probably better than the reality!

  28. Gotta love those easy-going labs! Our boy loves to take a dip in our pond, never mind that I think it's too cold sometimes.

He joined me on my walk-around the other day, checking the elec fence -- he's so funny sometimes. A few dips in the pond later, he was carrying around an old turtle shell!

Love your adventures and your photos, thanks for sharing!! :)

  38. I enjoyed riding with you, Janie! Daisy looks as though she's glad to be out and about this spring. (I also enjoyed your later post on Lake Powell - used to go there with our old Golden, rent a little boat, and explore.)
